Featherweight contender years

Moicano climbed quickly. He edged Zubaira Tukhugov by split decision in 2016 and outpointed Jeremy Stephens in 2017 before a guillotine loss to unbeaten Brian Ortega. He answered with the best stretch of his featherweight career: a 2018 decision over Calvin Kattar and a first-round rear-naked choke of veteran Cub Swanson. That run earned him a marquee 2019 bout with all-time great José Aldo, who stopped him by TKO, and he followed with another TKO loss to Chan Sung Jung — back-to-back defeats that pushed him to rethink his future.

Lightweight resurgence

The move up to lightweight reinvigorated him. He opened with a 2020 rear-naked choke of Damir Hadžović, absorbed a knockout loss to Rafael Fiziev, then strung together submissions of Jai Herbert and Alexander Hernandez in 2021 and 2022. After a competitive five-round decision loss to former champion Rafael dos Anjos, he choked out Brad Riddell in the first round at UFC 281. He surged again in 2024, decisioning Drew Dober, stopping Jalin Turner at UFC 300, and finishing Benoit Saint-Denis by doctor stoppage.

That hot streak earned him a stunning opportunity: when an injury opened the UFC 311 main event in January 2025, Moicano stepped in on short notice to challenge lightweight champion Islam Makhachev for the title. Makhachev submitted him by D'Arce choke in the first round. Moicano then dropped a decision to Beneil Dariush at UFC 317 before bouncing back in April 2026 with a second-round rear-naked choke of Chris Duncan.

Fighting style

Moicano is a grappler at his core, and the numbers prove it: 11 of his 21 wins have come by submission, most of them rear-naked chokes, against just two knockouts and eight decisions, for a 62% finish rate. His jiu-jitsu is among the most dangerous in the division, his chokes are tight and his striking has grown sharp enough to set up his takedowns. The honest vulnerability is on the feet against elite power — his losses skew toward knockouts and TKOs — but his durability, pace and submission threat make him a nightmare for anyone he can drag into deep water.
