BIO
Josh Emmett is an American mixed martial artist competing in the UFC’s featherweight division, known for his knockout power, wrestling foundation, and resilience inside the Octagon. Born on March 4, 1985, in Phoenix, Arizona, Emmett grew up in a military family and developed a strong work ethic from a young age. He later moved to Sacramento, California, where he would build his fighting career and become a staple of the Team Alpha Male gym, one of the most respected MMA camps in the world.
Emmett wrestled throughout high school and into college, competing at Menlo College in California, where he earned a degree in liberal studies. His wrestling background provided the base for his transition into mixed martial arts. In 2006, he began formal MMA training, combining his grappling with boxing and kickboxing to develop a well-rounded skill set.
He turned professional in 2011 and quickly rose through the regional scene, compiling an undefeated record before signing with the UFC in 2016. Emmett made his promotional debut on short notice against Jon Tuck in May 2016 at UFC Fight Night 87, winning a split decision. Despite breaking his finger during the fight, his gritty performance signaled the start of his UFC career.
Over the next few years, Emmett established himself as a tough, durable featherweight with the ability to end fights in dramatic fashion. In December 2017, he scored one of the biggest upsets of the year by knocking out former title challenger Ricardo Lamas in the first round at UFC on Fox 26. The victory highlighted his explosive knockout power and catapulted him into the division’s top tier.
However, Emmett’s career was not without setbacks. In 2018, he suffered a brutal loss to Jeremy Stephens that left him with multiple facial fractures, requiring extensive surgery and nearly a year away from competition. Many questioned whether he would return the same, but Emmett came back stronger, winning a string of fights against notable opponents including Michael Johnson, Mirsad Bektić, and Shane Burgos. His win over Burgos in 2020 was particularly significant, as he battled through a torn ACL sustained early in the fight yet still managed to secure a unanimous decision in one of the most exciting bouts of the year.
Emmett’s fighting style blends his wrestling background with heavy hands and sharp boxing. While he possesses the skills to wrestle, he is best known for his knockout power, particularly with his overhand right. His combination of durability, discipline, and fight IQ makes him a consistent threat to anyone in the featherweight division.
In June 2022, Emmett faced Calvin Kattar in a main-event bout at UFC on ESPN 37. After a competitive five-round battle, he earned a split-decision victory, further solidifying his place among the division’s elite. That win paved the way for a shot at the interim UFC Featherweight Championship in February 2023 against Yair RodrÃguez at UFC 284. Despite a strong start, Emmett was submitted in the second round. Later that year, he fought rising contender Ilia Topuria but lost by unanimous decision, though his toughness and durability were on full display.
Beyond the Octagon, Emmett is respected for his perseverance and work ethic. Overcoming injuries, tough losses, and long layoffs, he has repeatedly proven his ability to rebound and remain competitive at the highest level. His journey from wrestling mats to headlining UFC events embodies the determination required to succeed in mixed martial arts.
Still an active contender, Emmett continues to be a dangerous presence in the featherweight division, with knockout power capable of changing the course of any fight.
