BIO
Youssef Zalal is a Moroccan-born mixed martial artist competing in the UFCās featherweight division, recognized for his fluid movement, dynamic striking, and surprising submission skills. Born on September 4, 1996, in Casablanca, Morocco, Zalal moved to the United States as a teenager and settled in Colorado, where he would later train at Factory X under coach Marc Montoya.
Zalalās introduction to martial arts came when his mother encouraged him to take up kickboxing for self-defense. What began as a means to control his energy soon turned into a lifelong passion. Training at Factory X, he built a strong striking base and steadily added grappling skills to round out his game.
He made his professional MMA debut in 2017 and quickly stood out on the regional scene with his flashy attacks and ability to finish fights. By 2020, Zalal earned a call-up to the UFC, where he made a successful debut at UFC 247 with a unanimous decision win over Austin Lingo. He followed it with victories over Jordan Griffin and Peter Barrett, starting his UFC run with an impressive 3ā0 streak.
Nicknamed āThe Moroccan Devil,ā Zalalās style has always emphasized creativity and movement, mixing unorthodox kicks, flying knees, and opportunistic submissions. Despite his promising start, he hit a setback in 2020ā2021 with losses to Ilia Topuria, Seung Woo Choi, and Sean Woodson. After these defeats, Zalal was released from the UFC in mid-2021.
Determined to rebuild, Zalal returned to the regional circuit, earning several finishes to reestablish his reputation. His perseverance paid off when he returned to the UFC in 2024. That year, he submitted Billy Quarantillo with a rear-naked choke and followed it up with another submission win over Jarno Errens, earning a Performance of the Night bonus. Later in 2024, he continued his momentum by finishing Jack Shore via triangle-arm choke.
In February 2025, Zalal earned the biggest win of his career by defeating former title challenger Calvin Kattar via unanimous decision. The victory marked his seventh straight win and positioned him as the first Moroccan-born fighter to break into the UFCās top 10 rankings.
Zalalās resurgence has showcased not only his unpredictable striking but also his rapidly improving grappling, making him a well-rounded threat in the featherweight division. His storyāfrom early promise to setbacks and redemptionāreflects resilience, adaptability, and national pride as he carries the Moroccan flag onto MMAās biggest stage.
