Adversity and resilience

The level jumped at UFC 282 in December 2022, where undefeated future champion Ilia Topuria submitted Mitchell with a second-round arm-triangle choke, his first professional loss. He rebounded with a clear decision over Dan Ige in September 2023, but ran into a brutal first-round knockout from Josh Emmett at UFC 296 later that year. Mitchell answered emphatically at UFC 310 in December 2024, finishing Kron Gracie by knockout via slam and elbows in the third round – a rare highlight finish for the grappling specialist.

Mitchell’s 2025 brought a back-and-forth stretch. Jean Silva submitted him with a ninja choke at UFC 314 in April 2025, but he bounced back in July with a unanimous-decision win over Said Nurmagomedov.
