Welterweight riser

Luque built a reputation as one of the division's most dangerous closers. He knocked out Hector Urbina in 2016 and stopped a then-undefeated Belal Muhammad at UFC 205, before a 2017 decision loss to Leon Edwards – one of the few men to consistently solve him. He responded with a long, violent run: a 2017 D'Arce-choke submission of the unbeaten Niko Price, knockouts of Chad Laprise and Jalin Turner in 2018, and 2019 wins over Bryan Barberena, Derrick Krantz and Mike Perry.

Contender peak

After a 2019 decision loss to Stephen Thompson, Luque entered the best stretch of his career. He beat Niko Price again in 2020, knocked out Randy Brown, and then submitted former champion Tyron Woodley by D'Arce choke in the first round at UFC 260 in 2021. He followed with a first-round D'Arce submission of Michael Chiesa, climbing into title contention as one of the most feared finishers at 170 pounds.

Veteran resilience

The elite gauntlet brought hard nights: a 2022 decision loss in the rematch with Belal Muhammad and a knockout defeat to Geoff Neal. Luque rebounded with a five-round decision over former champion Rafael dos Anjos in 2023, then weathered an up-and-down stretch – losses to Joaquin Buckley, Kevin Holland and Joel Alvarez mixed with submission wins over Themba Gorimbo and, in April 2026, Kelvin Gastelum by first-round anaconda choke.

Fighting style

Luque is one of the UFC's most complete and lethal finishers, with a finish rate near 88 percent – 11 of his 24 wins by knockout and 10 by submission, an almost perfectly balanced split. His heavy hands and willingness to trade make him a knockout threat in any exchange, while his dual jiu-jitsu and Luta Livre background makes him deadly the instant a fight hits the mat, where his D'Arce and anaconda chokes are signature weapons. The honest knock is durability against top strikers – his recent decision and knockout losses show that his all-action approach can be exploited – but few welterweights are as consistently dangerous to finish a fight from anywhere.
