Jim Miller bio
Personal background
Jim Miller is one of the UFC's most enduring lightweights, a 5'8" New Jersey grinder nicknamed "A-10" whose 39-19 record has been built across a record-setting run inside the Octagon. Born James Miller on August 30, 1983, in Sparta, New Jersey, he is the younger brother of fellow UFC veteran Dan Miller and started wrestling at age four, competing at Sparta High School and briefly at Virginia Tech. He took up mixed martial arts in 2005 alongside Dan, training first at Planet Jiu-Jitsu and then at AMA Fight Club in Whippany before the brothers founded their own Sussex County gym. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, Miller has paired a wrestling base with one of the deepest submission games in the division's history.
Path to the UFC
Miller turned pro in 2005 and quickly racked up submissions on the East Coast circuit, choking out Kevin Roddy and armbarring Muhsin Corbbrey early. He suffered an honest decision loss to future UFC champion Frankie Edgar in 2006, a setback that did nothing to stall him. He kept finishing opponents – including a triangle of Anthony Morrison and a decision over veteran Bart Palaszewski – before debuting in the UFC in 2008 with a third-round submission of David Baron.
Climbing the lightweight ladder
Miller established himself as a top contender across 2009 and 2010, beating Matt Wiman and Mac Danzig at UFC 100, then running off wins over Duane Ludwig, Mark Bocek and Gleison Tibau. The signature win of his prime came at UFC 124 in December 2010, when he caught an undefeated Charles Oliveira in a first-round kneebar – a marquee submission over a future lightweight champion. He extended his streak past Kamal Shalorus before a 2011 decision loss to Benson Henderson stopped his momentum just short of a title shot.
The gatekeeper and the iron man
Miller settled into a long stretch as a respected gatekeeper, mixing big wins with losses to elite names. He submitted Melvin Guillard, dropped a guillotine battle to Nate Diaz, and beat rival Joe Lauzon twice in fights of the night. His later years featured a knockout loss to Donald Cerrone in 2014 and a memorable measure of revenge in 2022, when he guillotined Cerrone in a clash of two of the promotion's most active veterans. Miller has continued to deliver into his 40s, submitting Clay Guida, knocking out Erick Gonzalez, and choking out Damon Jackson at UFC 309. In 2026 he added another first-round guillotine over Jared Gordon, extending a career remarkable for its sheer longevity.
Fighting style
Miller is a submission specialist at heart: 22 of his 39 wins have come by submission, anchored by a slick guillotine and a constant scramble threat off his wrestling base. He blends takedowns, top control and a willingness to hunt finishes from any position, and he has shown surprising knockout power in spots, with seven of his wins by KO/TKO. The flip side of his durability is age and mileage – 14 of his losses have come by decision, often to younger, faster opponents who keep the fight standing. But his toughness, fight IQ and submission instincts have kept him competitive across one of the longest tenures in UFC history.
Career highlights
- Kneebar of Charles Oliveira — submitted a then-undefeated future UFC lightweight champion in the first round at UFC 124.
- UFC's iron man — amassed more Octagon appearances than nearly anyone in promotion history, still winning fights into his 40s.
- 22 career submissions — one of the most prolific submission artists the lightweight division has produced.
