Kowalkiewicz wasted no time in the octagon, debuting with a December 2015 decision over Randa Markos and following with a 2016 win over Heather Clark. The defining victory came at UFC 201 in July 2016, when she upset future two-time champion Rose Namajunas by split decision to push her record to a perfect 10-0 and secure a championship opportunity. At UFC 205 in November 2016 — the promotion's historic Madison Square Garden debut — she challenged dominant titleholder and fellow Pole Joanna Jędrzejczyk for the strawweight crown, ultimately dropping a competitive five-round unanimous decision in the biggest fight of her career.
