Personal background
Giga Chikadze is a Georgian featherweight in the UFC, a former elite kickboxer who fights under the nickname "Ninja" and holds a professional MMA record of 15-6. Born August 25, 1988, in Tbilisi, Georgia, he began training Goju-ryu karate as a young child – inspired by martial-arts films – and eventually earned a third-degree black belt in the discipline. Before turning to MMA he built a decorated striking career, competing for GLORY and amassing a long professional kickboxing résumé built around devastating body kicks that became known as the "Giga kick." In 2014 he relocated to Huntington Beach, California, to chase a UFC title and joined the renowned Kings MMA under coach Rafael Cordeiro, where the 6'0" striker rounded out his game.
Path to the UFC
Chikadze's run to the UFC was not a straight line. After years on the kickboxing circuit – including a 2015 split-decision loss to Anvar Boynazarov at Glory 23 and a 2017 decision loss to Dylan Salvador – he set his sights on mixed martial arts. His first crack at a UFC contract ended in heartbreak: on Dana White's Contender Series in June 2018, he dominated Austin Springer for most of three rounds before getting caught in a late rear-naked choke. The setback only delayed him. After regrouping on the regional scene, he earned his promotional debut and won it via split decision over Brandon Davis in September 2019.
Featherweight surge
Once in the UFC, Chikadze went on a tear. He opened 2020 with a split-decision win over Jamall Emmers at UFC 248, then beat Irwin Rivera and the previously undefeated Omar Morales on the cards. The finishes began to flow: a first-round TKO of Jamey Simmons in November 2020, a first-round body-kick-and-punches stoppage of veteran Cub Swanson in May 2021, and the signature win of his career – a third-round TKO of dangerous striker Edson Barboza in August 2021 that pushed his UFC winning streak and earned him a main-event spotlight.
Top-contender tests
That momentum carried Chikadze into a January 2022 headliner against Calvin Kattar, who handed him his first UFC loss by a five-round unanimous decision and exposed the grappling and pace questions that come with stepping into the division's elite. After a layoff he returned in August 2023 to outpoint Alex Caceres by unanimous decision, but the back half of his run has been difficult. He dropped unanimous decisions to Arnold Allen at UFC 304 in July 2024 and to David Onama in April 2025, then suffered a second-round knockout against Kevin Vallejos in December 2025.
