Herbert Burns is a Brazilian featherweight who has competed in the UFC, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt nicknamed "The Blaze" with an 11-6 record built largely on his grappling. Born on February 2, 1988, in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, he is the younger brother of former UFC welterweight title challenger Gilbert Burns, and the two trained jiu-jitsu together from childhood after Herbert first stepped onto the mats around age 10. He earned his BJJ black belt in 2011 and remained an accomplished competitor on the grappling circuit, racking up IBJJF no-gi titles even as MMA became his focus. Fighting out of Kill Cliff FC, the 5'9" featherweight pairs that elite submission pedigree with a frame and 73-inch reach that let him impose his grappling on opponents.
Path to the UFC
Burns turned pro in 2012 and made his name in Asia under the ONE Championship banner, where he stacked up wins against credentialed competition. The oldest of his marquee bouts came in March 2014, a decision over the vastly experienced Harris Sarmiento at ONE FC 14. After a stint that included setbacks against tough featherweights, he rebuilt in the United States with Titan FC, submitting Luis Gomez by first-round rear-naked choke at Titan FC 54 in April 2019. Burns opened his UFC tenure with two of the most impressive finishes of his career. In January 2020 he stopped Nate Landwehr with a first-round knee from the clinch, showing his striking could be just as sudden as his submissions. He followed that at UFC 250 in June 2020 by submitting veteran Evan Dunham with a first-round rear-naked choke, a result that pushed him toward the division's prospect conversation. The momentum stalled badly from there. In August 2020 he was stopped by Daniel Pineda via second-round elbows from a crucifix, and after a long layoff he lost to Bill Algeo in July 2022. Returns in 2024 brought further trouble: Julio Arce stopped him with punches in March, and Jack Jenkins finished him via ground strikes at UFC 305 in August.
