Ismael Bonfim, the lightweight known as "Marreta," is a Brazilian mixed martial artist born on December 28, 1995, in Brasília, Federal District. The elder of the fighting Bonfim brothers – younger sibling Gabriel is a UFC welterweight and jiu-jitsu black belt – Ismael was shaped by family, improvised training spaces and a long apprenticeship on Brazil's regional circuit. He began training as a child and developed at Cerrado MMA, the Brasília-based team he still represents. Path to the UFC
Bonfim turned professional in 2013 as a teenager and learned in front of live crowds, opening his career with a string of finishes before running into a future UFC contender. The momentum met a wall in July 2023, when surging contender Benoit Saint-Denis submitted him in the first round with a rear-naked choke. Bonfim rebounded in May 2024, outworking veteran Vinc Pichel over three rounds at UFC 301. The next stretch was harder: he was stopped by a first-round doctor's stoppage against Nazim Sadykhov in February 2025, then dropped a second-round TKO to Chris Padilla in November 2025. He is scheduled to return in July 2026 against Axel Sola.
