Personal background
Katlyn Cerminara, nicknamed the "Blonde Fighter" and long known as Katlyn Chookagian, is an American flyweight competing in the UFC, based in Jersey City, New Jersey, with Team Renzo Gracie. Born on December 28, 1988, she began martial arts as a young child, earning a first-degree black belt in Tang Soo Do karate at age nine before transitioning into boxing and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, in which she holds a black belt. A graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University with a degree in special education, the 5'9" flyweight built her game on a tall, rangy frame, crisp boxing and constant volume, training across New Jersey and New York with specialists in boxing, jiu-jitsu, wrestling and MMA. She competed for years under her maiden name Chookagian out of dedication to her Armenian fan base before adopting her married name professionally.
Path to the UFC
Cerminara turned professional in 2014 and rose quickly through the regional ranks, fighting for CFFC and WSOF and going undefeated to start her career. She picked up notable early wins, including a 2015 armbar submission of Melinda Fábián and a decision over future contender Sijara Eubanks, before earning a UFC contract on the strength of a perfect regional record.
