Katlyn Cerminara bio
Personal background
Katlyn Cerminara, nicknamed the "Blonde Fighter" and long known as Katlyn Chookagian, is an American flyweight competing in the UFC, based in Jersey City, New Jersey, with Team Renzo Gracie. Born on December 28, 1988, she began martial arts as a young child, earning a first-degree black belt in Tang Soo Do karate at age nine before transitioning into boxing and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, in which she holds a black belt. A graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University with a degree in special education, the 5'9" flyweight built her game on a tall, rangy frame, crisp boxing and constant volume, training across New Jersey and New York with specialists in boxing, jiu-jitsu, wrestling and MMA. She competed for years under her maiden name Chookagian out of dedication to her Armenian fan base before adopting her married name professionally.
Path to the UFC
Cerminara turned professional in 2014 and rose quickly through the regional ranks, fighting for CFFC and WSOF and going undefeated to start her career. She picked up notable early wins, including a 2015 armbar submission of Melinda Fábián and a decision over future contender Sijara Eubanks, before earning a UFC contract on the strength of a perfect regional record.
UFC career
Cerminara debuted in the UFC in July 2016 with a unanimous-decision win over Lauren Murphy, then dropped a split decision to Liz Carmouche at UFC 205. She rebounded at UFC 210 with a split-decision win over Irene Aldana and built a strong bantamweight-to-flyweight run, beating veteran Alexis Davis in 2018 and Joanne Wood and Jennifer Maia in 2019. That form earned her a title shot at UFC 247 in February 2020, where champion Valentina Shevchenko stopped her in the third round. She regrouped immediately, beating Antonina Shevchenko and Cynthia Calvillo in 2020 – with a knockout loss to Jéssica Andrade in between – then defeated Viviane Araujo in 2021 and Amanda Ribas in 2022. Later setbacks against Manon Fiorot and Maycee Barber came as the division's next generation rose.

Fighting style
Cerminara is a rangy, technical point-fighter who wins with movement, distance management and high-volume boxing rather than power. With 15 of her 18 wins coming by decision and a finish rate around 17 percent, she is a textbook example of a fighter who out-positions and out-works opponents over three rounds, using her length to pile up strikes from the outside while staying defensively sound. Her durability and IQ have kept her a fixture in the flyweight top tier for years and made her a measuring stick for contenders. The trade-off is a relative lack of finishing threat, which has occasionally left close rounds in the judges' hands, and the elite finishers of the division – Shevchenko and Andrade among them – have been the ones to truly stop her.
Career highlights
- UFC flyweight title challenger — earned a championship shot against Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 247 after a long run near the top of the division.
- Win over Jennifer Maia — beat former title challenger Jennifer Maia twice, headlining a résumé full of victories over ranked flyweights and bantamweights.
- Elite longevity — an 18-fight winner who spent years ranked among the world's best flyweights while beating names like Amanda Ribas and Alexis Davis.
