Mateusz Gamrot bio
Personal background
Mateusz Gamrot is a Polish lightweight competing in the UFC and one of the most accomplished fighters Poland has produced. Born December 11, 1990, in Poznań, Poland, Gamrot began wrestling at age 10 and moved to a sports boarding school as a teenager to train freestyle wrestling, eventually competing in hundreds of matches and earning a place on the national team. Nicknamed "Gamer," he is also a decorated grappler who has tested himself at the ADCC World Championships. The 5'10" lightweight trains out of American Top Team in Florida and carries a 26-4 professional record built on a smothering, world-class wrestling base.
Path to the UFC
Gamrot turned professional in 2012 and built his name in Poland's premier promotion, KSW, where he became a two-division champion and one of the country's biggest stars. His standout KSW run included a unanimous-decision win over UFC veteran Andre Winner at KSW 24 in 2013 and a memorable rivalry with Norman Parke – Gamrot won their first meeting at KSW 39 by decision in 2017, the rematch at KSW 40 ended in a no contest after an accidental eye poke, and he settled the trilogy with a TKO at KSW 53 in 2020. He entered the UFC in 2020 as a highly touted, unbeaten prospect.
Adjusting to the UFC
Gamrot's UFC debut ended in controversy – a split-decision loss to Guram Kutateladze in October 2020 that many observers felt he deserved to win. He answered emphatically, knocking out Scott Holtzman in 2021 and submitting veteran Jeremy Stephens with a first-round kimura. He closed 2021 by stopping Diego Ferreira with a knee to the body, kicking off a serious climb up the lightweight rankings.
Top contender
Gamrot's signature win came in June 2022, when he outwrestled the dangerous Arman Tsarukyan over five rounds in a Fight of the Night classic. He dropped a competitive decision to Beneil Dariush at UFC 280, then rebounded with a split-decision win over Jalin Turner at UFC 285 and a stoppage of Rafael Fiziev in 2023. He added a decision over former champion Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 299 in 2024, establishing himself firmly among the division's elite.
Recent run
Gamrot's path near the top has been demanding. He dropped a split decision to Dan Hooker at UFC 305 in 2024, rebounded with a unanimous-decision win over Ľudovít Klein in 2025, then was submitted by former champion Charles Oliveira later that year. He most recently returned to the win column with a second-round arm-triangle submission of Esteban Ribovics at UFC 327.
Fighting style
Gamrot is one of the best wrestlers in the lightweight division, pairing relentless takedown entries with heavy top control and a constantly improving submission and striking game. His record is well-rounded – 12 of his 26 wins by decision, eight by knockout and six by submission, a 54% finish rate – reflecting a fighter who can grind out rounds or hunt finishes depending on the matchup. His cardio is exceptional, and his ADCC-level grappling makes him a nightmare to keep upright. His losses have come almost entirely against the division's very top tier and in close, competitive fights.
