Bia Mesquita bio
Personal background
Beatriz Mesquita is a Brazilian bantamweight in the UFC and one of the most decorated grapplers ever to transition to mixed martial arts, carrying an undefeated 7–0 MMA record. Born Beatriz de Oliveira Mesquita on April 7, 1991, in Rio de Janeiro, "Bia" discovered jiu-jitsu around the age of five, inspired by her brother, and also trained judo and freestyle wrestling growing up. As a teenager she moved to train under Leticia Ribeiro, one of the greatest female grapplers in history, at a Gracie Humaita affiliate. Mesquita became a multiple-time IBJJF World Champion and ADCC gold medalist at black belt — widely regarded as a women's BJJ great. Standing 5'2" with a 66" reach and now fighting out of American Top Team, she brings a world-class submission game into the cage.
Grappling pedigree and the move to MMA
Before MMA, Mesquita compiled one of the deepest competitive grappling résumés in the sport, including a notable submission win over Jena Bishop at the 2019 ADCC World Championships. Like any elite competitor, she had close, hard-fought matches along the way — including an overtime loss to Juliana Miller at Medusa 1 in 2021. She continued to compete in marquee grappling superfights, submitting former UFC champion Miesha Tate by armbar at UFC Fight Pass Invitational 3 in 2022 and tapping former UFC title challenger Jennifer Maia with a rear-naked choke at ADXC 3 in 2024, building a bridge toward a full move into MMA.
MMA career
Mesquita launched her MMA career in 2024 and quickly translated her grappling dominance to the cage, racking up early finishes on the regional circuit. She earned her way to the UFC and made an immediate impression in October 2025, submitting Irina Alekseeva with a second-round rear-naked choke. She followed up in March 2026 with another rear-naked choke, this time finishing Montserrat Rendon in the first round to push her unbeaten MMA record to 7–0.

Fighting style
Mesquita is, unsurprisingly, a submission specialist of the highest order. Five of her seven MMA wins have come by submission, reflecting an 86% finish rate built on decades of elite grappling experience — she hunts the back and the rear-naked choke relentlessly once the fight hits the mat. As a still-developing mixed martial artist she is naturally most dangerous in the clinch and on the ground, where her control and submission timing are world-class. The questions that remain are the standard ones for a grappler crossing over: how her striking and takedown entries hold up against opponents specifically prepared to keep the fight standing. So far, no one in MMA has been able to deny her the grappling exchanges she wants.
Career highlights
- Undefeated in MMA — a perfect 7–0 record with five submission finishes, carrying her grappling pedigree straight into the UFC.
- Decorated grappling champion — a Gracie Humaita black belt under Leticia Ribeiro and multiple-time IBJJF World and ADCC champion before ever entering MMA.
- UFC submission statements — choked out Irina Alekseeva and Montserrat Rendon in her first UFC appearances.
